Scientific writing: Using ChatGPT effectively and responsibly
Abstract
This interactive workshop provides input on how to integrate ChatGPT in the writing process in a way that is compliant with ETH regulations. We will discuss the basics of effective prompting and the diverse roles ChatGPT can play in writing process. Furthermore, we highlight the limitations and risks of this AI tool, including plagiarism. You will have the opportunity to experiment with ChatGPT in class. Therefore, we ask you to create an Open AI account for ChatGPT before the course.
Learning Objectives
At the end of the course, you are able to
- create effective prompts for ChatGPT as part of your writing process
- assign different roles to ChatGPT (depending on your writing needs)
- critically assess the output of ChatGPT
- ensure that your use of ChatGPT does not infringe on scientific integrity

- Effective prompting techniques
- Different uses of ChatGPT in a writing project: brainstorming, outlining, drafting, revising, providing feedback, summarizing, etc.
- Limitations and risks of ChatGPT and alternative tools
- Plagiarism and declaration of originality

This course assumes little or no background knowledge. If you already
have substantial experience using ChatGPT, we recommend that you take the
course "Mastering
scientific writing with ChatGPT and other AI tools".
