About myPath
What is myPath?
myPath is a platform that aims to connect offers at ETH Zurich (or at any partner institution) and prospective participants, be these students or postdocs, in a more efficient and centralised way. We exceptionally accept educational offers aimed at postdocs when these offers are also available to students.
Why myPath?
myPath complements the service provided by existing software applications at ETH Zurich (Course Catalogue and myStudies, which allow searching and documenting the participation in curricular activities). What makes myPath different is that it allows students to explore curricular and extracurricular activities, and services offered at ETH Zurich or by partners of ETH, and therewith provides users with the opportunity to shape their study journey at ETH actively.
Is myPath for me?
Yes. myPath is for you if you are an organiser at ETH Zurich (or at any partner institution) and you want to promote your educational offer in a more efficient way to students at ETH Zurich. myPath is also for you if you are a Bachelor's, Master's, or doctoral student who wants to find suitable educational offers for your competence development during the studies. If you are not yet an ETH member or student, feel free to stick around and explore our educational offer by navigating the homepage. We exceptionally accept educational offers aimed at postdocs when these offers are also available to students.
What content can I find on myPath?
myPath displays curricular and extracurricular activities and services that address ETH students (or prospective ones) and are offered at ETH Zurich or by partner institutions. All the educational offers displayed on myPath have been previously matched to the competencies that participants can develop in them. In this way, students can search for suitable offers based on the competencies that interest them most, besides searching using other filters (date, audience, organiser, language, location, etc.). The FAQ page provides more information about exploring, visualising, enrolling in, and documenting activities.
What can I do on myPath as a student?
As a student (at the bachelor, master, or doctoral level) you can log in to benefit from a customised search of educational offers that suit your interests or educational background best. This search is different from the one you can make without a profile by navigating the homepage. You will also have the possibility to keep track on how each curricular or extracurricular activity you attend, or pass contributes to your competence development. Additionally, myPath will automatically compile a list of curricular and extracurricular activities that you have attended or passed at ETH Zurich. You can even record other activities or experiences into myPath. You can further modify this list and export it to get feedback or advice about your competence development, receive advice, or simply to get ready to take your next step in your studies or career. This list is not a transcript of records.
What can I do on myPath as a postdoc?
As a postdoc with an active, free myPath profile, you can benefit from a customised search of educational offers that suit your interests best. This search is different from the one you can make without a profile by navigating the homepage, since myPath will pre-select offers for postdocs for you. An active myPath profile will also give you the possibility to enrol in educational offers that are still open for registration and address also postdocs. Note that postdocs are not the target group on myPath, but that we promote offers aimed at postdocs if they are also available for students. Other ad-hoc platforms for postdocs at ETH exist, for example the Lifelong Learning Hub (L3H).
What can I do on myPath as organiser of an activity or service?
If you have an active, free myPath profile, you can register your educational offers for publication on myPath. Prospective participants will be either redirected to the website of your offers or, if you prefer, they will be able to enrol for your activities directly on myPath, where it is possible to manage the enrolment process from start to end. You can reach your target audience more effectively and efficiently by indicating specific participation criteria (e.g., degree programme, semester of enrolment) for your target audience. Visit the Registrations page for further details about the registration process for services and extracurricular activities. Curricular activities are automatically imported from ETH Zurich's Course Catalogue.
Who is behind myPath?
myPath is a product of the Rector’s ETH Talent initiative, an initiative started by Prof. Dr. Sarah M. Springman and led to its roll-out under the Rector, Prof. Dr. Günther Dissertori. Dr. Barbara La Cara (UTL, Unit for Teaching and Learning) has been responsible for the content development, user experience, and catalogue curation of myPath since its inception in 2021 until summer 2024. However, myPath would not have been possible without the extensive consultation of the organisers and students of the educational offers, to whom we are greatly thankful. As of July 2024, myPath has entered its operational stage and is supported as well as developed further by the myPath Team. The software development is outsourced to Brogli Informatik GmbH.
What are the fundamentals of myPath?
myPath builds upon the ETH Competence Framework, which describes the competencies that ETH Zurich aims to foster for its students. With subject-specific competencies at its core, the ETH Competence Framework integrates the teaching of method-specific, social, and personal competencies (transferable competencies) into the educational offers of ETH. On myPath, students are guided through the various educational offers from the perspective of the competencies they can develop by participating in curricular activities, extracurricular activities, and services. More information about the ETH Competence Framework can be found at the Competencies at ETH Zurich website created for the students (or on the ETH Competence Framework website, if you are a teacher).
How are student and postdoc data treated?
Student and postdoc profiles are treated confidentially, meaning that no sensitive information is shared with the organisers of educational offers without the student’s or postdocs’ explicit consent. User data are hosted on servers of ETH Zurich. Organisers of educational offers will use the disclosed enrolment information (after the participants’ consent) to finalise the enrolment process and, if needed, for their own statistical purposes in an anonymised way.
Will myPath be developed further?
Yes, myPath is continuously under development. You are welcome to send us your suggestions for improving the user experience to mypath@ethz.ch. See the FAQ page for more details about how to use myPath. If you want to promote services or activities on myPath, visit our Registrations page.
