ETH Research Data Management Summer School 2024
Abstract
This ETH Summer School in Research Data Management is aimed at doctoral students and postdocs within the ETH domain. It gives an extensive overview of research data management (RDM), its principles as well as its practical implications and useful tools for early career researchers.
Learning Objectives
Participants are able to
- explain the basic concepts and components of research data management (RDM) along the research data life cycle in a national and international context;
- fulfil current requirements regarding RDM and Data Management Plans (DMPs) of ETH Zurich and research funders (i.e. Open Research Data Policy of the SNSF, Rules on Open Research Data in Horizon Europe) in their own research;
- understand the basics of a DMP and develop DMPs compliant with the requirements of a research funder;
- survey the challenges of Active RDM and properly annotate (metadata), store and back up research data with appropriate tools for future reuse;
- critically evaluate and use tools for data sharing and other repositories, including RDM services at ETH Zurich (e.g. ETH Research Data Hub, ETH Research Collection) and international repositories;
- understand the challenges of long-term preservation and derive measures to prepare data accordingly.
Content
RDM is vital to researchers for ensuring the proper organisation of research data along the entire lifecycle from creation to preservation including their sharing as FAIR data. Nowadays, research institutions like ETH Zurich as well as many funding agencies (e.g. SNSF, Horizon Europe) expect good RDM practice throughout the entire project period and a data management plan. The Summer School supports researchers in meeting these requirements.
Presentations from ETH experts will be complemented by practical workshops, where you can immediately apply the knowledge gained during the sessions. A marketplace at the end of the Summer School offers the possibility of 1:1 consulting to discuss open questions and problems concerning various topics related to research data management. This will also offer various expert offices at ETH Zurich.
