Abstract

This workshop is aimed at master students considering pursuing doctorate studies, and who aren't yet sure of their choice. Thanks to input and questions from the facilitators, as well as peer coaching, students reflect on their personal pros and cons of pursuing doctoral studies.

Learning Objectives

After this workshop, students are better equipped to make a decision concerning their next career step: industry or academia (PhD). They learn about the difference in cultures between academia and industry. They have identified their career motivations, values and interests, as well as key stumbling blocks within their decision process (Decision-Making Confusion, Commitment Anxiety, and External Conflict). They will know which key questions to ask themselves before engaging onto one or the other career paths and know which next steps to take to overcome these.

Content

During this 4-6 hour workshop, students work in pairs or groups and reflect on the key learning topics introduced by the facilitators. During the workshop, participants complete different checklists/assessments (e.g. Career Thoughts Inventory) and are introduced to different models (decision making). The seminar is based on experiential and blended learning approach, consisting 20% of facilitator input / presentations, 50% exercises, 30% peer coaching. In the extended version, the participants have the opportunity to interact with ETH Alumni working in industry and academia.
