Abstract

Citation is an essential part of scientific writing. To prevent plagiarism, it is important to know how to cite correctly. But to what do you have to pay attention when quoting? Which citation styles exist, and what exactly is considered as plagiarism? What is paraphrasing? You will also learn how plagiarism detection software works, how to analyse its results and which steps need to be taken after your paper has been scanned to ensure that it does not contain any form of plagiarism.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the course, you

  • will be able to distinguish between the types of plagiarism and know how to avoid them through correct citation and paraphrasing, and
  • will be aware that there are different citation styles and subject conventions and know where to find the relevant information.

  • What is the purpose of citations and paraphrases? What are the risks when quoting and how can they be avoided?
  • How are citations and the bibliography connected?
  • Why is it important to lay the foundations for correct citations as early as the reading stage?
  • How does correctly integrating of quotations and paraphrases into the text help to guide the reader?
