Intra- and Interpersonal competencies for academia
Abstract
For a successful career in science, it is not only important to conduct good research, but also to be able to establish good relationships (in supervision and with peers), as well as to be able to cultivate passion and resilience. These workshops aim to teach you strategies that further develop your intra- and inter-personal skills for the academic environment.
Learning Objectives
- Generating quality ideas from abundance and defending them
- Working in and empowering intercultural, interdisciplinary teams
- Upholding independence and motivation in the face of moving deadlines and goals
- Dealing with pressure and finding balance in an inherently hierarchical system
- Understanding points of view from different contexts, especially between being supervised and teaching
- Learning to make mistakes, benefiting from them, and exploring the limits of one’s own abilities.
Content
This course prepares PhD students and postdocs for some of the main challenges of interdisciplinary research in multicultural environments in a fun, explorative, and memorable way. Each course day includes brain-teasing theory and thought-provoking exercises that are founded in business theater, work psychology, project management, and organizational change management and are carefully transferred to the academic world. We use established methods from improvisation theater to help participants make a connection with the presented material, which greatly supports long-term memorization.
