Interview Skills Training - experience a live simulation

Seminars, Lectures & Colloquia
Career Center

Abstract

After a short introduction into different interview techniques, a prechosen student has the opportunity to experience a live interview with fictive recruiters (1 or 2 ETH Career Center Coaches). He/she then gets real-time feedback from the interviewers and the audience.

Learning Objectives

By participating as the interviewee during this simulated interview, the student learns - thanks to realtime feedback from peers and from ETH Career Center coaches on his/her performance - how he/she can improve his/her performance during a job interview. More specifically, the student receives feedback on:

  • How to he/she was perceived during the interview (verbal and non-verbally)
  • How he/she performed on key questions and why the interviewers asked these questions
  • How he/she used the STAR interviewing method
  • How he/she could be even more impactful

Content

Before the presentation takes place, a student is identified to play the candidate. He/she sends us their CV and a job advert for a job they would be interested in. At the beginning of the presentation, the facilitators (interviewees) explain to the audience how the session will unfold. The audience is given the CV and the job advert. Then the interview begins and the audience is asked to observe the questions and how the interviewee answers. At the end of the role-play, the candidate is asked what went well, less well; the audience can also give feedback. The interviewers / facilitators then debrief the interview, high-lighting what went well, less well; describing why certain questions are asked; giving tips on answering strategies. At then end, the audience can ask questions.
