Coach facilitating the PRISMA Capstone course

Abstract

Senior students can coach BSc students at the PRISMA Capstone class. To be able to coach, they must first join a 6-day training, where they will be taught the Design Thinking methodology, as well as sharpen their leadership, critical thinking, teamwork and self-awareness competencies. Moreover, participating students will belong to ETH's coaching pool, which will allow them to work at several other ETH projects fostering teamwork and innovation, like the ETH Week.

Learning Objectives

  • Students have worked on their leadership skills: they know how to direct a group and push them into the right direction. They can observe their team, analyse and evaluate different situations and recommend courses of action. They support their achievements, motivate and inspire them. At the same time, they are able to provide criticism in a constructive manner.
  • They should be able to help out a team that feels overwhelmed by breaking down their tasks into parts, while keeping the broader picture in mind at the same time
  • They can also provide personal emotional support to a team member or help to solve conflicts between team members
  • They are confident with using the Design Thinking methodology and would feel comfortable guiding a team through a full Design Thinking iteration if given a tightly-scheduled plan

Content

The Coaching Training takes place during 3 weekends (6 days in total). It combines theoretical and practical aspects.

  • Day 1-2: Theoretical introduction to the Design Thinking (DT) methodology and taking part in one full iteration of the cycle as participants.
  • Day 3-4: Theoretical foundations of the coaching role, combined with practical training in the format of e.g. a role-play. This is followed by a reflection on the own strengths and weaknesses.
  • Day 5-6: Facilitate a 1-day DT workshop by leading a team through an innovation process. All participants receive personalised feedback from the course leader by the end of the workshop.
