Abstract

The ETH Library supports you on your way to your Bachelor’s and Master’s thesis. We will show you how to prepare for this project in a step-by-step manner, what skills you need to acquire for it and what role searching for information and literature plays. If you plan your Bachelor’s and Master’s thesis well, you will remain focused throughout the entire process, from drafting of the concept to searching for literature and reading to research and writing.

Learning Objectives

  • You will understand the connection between the most important tasks at the beginning of the research and writing process: finding a topic, writing a research question and proposal and creating an outline.
  • You will learn how the formulation of your research question, outline and proposal have a decisive impact on the further course of your work.
  • You will take the first steps towards developing your research question.
  • You will identify skills that are necessary for your work.
  • You will know which services the ETH Library offers to support you in your research and writing project.

Content

The Moodle course gives an overview of how to start a Bachelor's or Master's thesis. Conceptualising and planning are important to write a scientific paper. The Moodle course explains what topic, research question, outline and proposal are and why they are an important basis for the writing process. You learn what skills you need to acquire. These are subject-specific, method-specific as well as personal and social skills. Added to this is information literacy. The ETH Library offers courses and advice on this: searching and managing literature and information, searching in databases or various topics related to scientific writing. In the Moodle course, you also receive tips on communicating with the supervisor. It lists aspects that you should agree on with your supervisor. You will also receive initial tips on how to avoid writer's block.
