Abstract

The PRISMA events not only connect students from different disciplines among each other, but also students with academia and industry experts. The goal is to help the students widen their horizons and to build a bridge between university and society. Some examples are the Interdisciplinary Ersti Weekend, the 1st day Redesign Zürich workshop and the input talks at the Empower your Skills in the Age of Technology event.

Learning Objectives

  • Students are inspired to think broader and feel curious about other fields distinct than their own
  • During the events, they have had the chance to solve a fun challenge in multidisciplinary teams. They see the value in having cross-disciplinary connections, actively look for situations where they can meet people from different backgrounds and cultivate those relationships
  • They have had the chance to take a closer look at real-world applications and projects, building a bridge between the knowledge acquired at university and practical uses. Thus, they feel more empowered to launch a project of their own
  • They have reflected about their own career path, their failures and their learnings. They feel more self-confident than before
  • They also feel attracted to further exploring the Design Thinking methodology after having been briefly introduced to it and will potentially sign up either for the PRISMA Capstone Course or for the Coaching Training

Content

As an example, for the “Empower your Skills in the Age of Technology” event, we invited three speakers of different background, age, gender and profile to talk about their career: a nano-physicist who became a successful entrepreneur, a computer scientist who applies Machine Learning to monitor deforestation and a robotics expert building drones to e.g. extract coral samples from the bottom of the ocean. But what do they have in common? They all work in multidisciplinary fields and see the value of combining knowledge across disciplines by working in teams. Students were encouraged to ask questions and reflect about their own careers, inspired by the three speakers.
